HOMEOWNER GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

At home: filter and airflow

Inspect the filter and replace it as the equipment instructions require. Keep supply and return grilles open and clear. Check the thermostat’s heating mode and schedule.

At home: alarms and clear space

Test carbon monoxide alarms according to their instructions. Keep stored items away from heating equipment and leave access clear. Do not enter an unsafe attic or remove equipment panels.

Ask a professional: system operation

Before heating season, request checks of the thermostat, controls, airflow, electrical connections, motors, and overall performance as applicable to the system.

Ask a professional: fuel-burning equipment

For a furnace or other fuel-burning heater, ask about combustion safety, venting, the heat exchanger, and gas connections. These checks belong to a qualified technician.

Make a simple annual record

Record service dates, filter sizes, repairs, and changes in comfort. Photograph the model label where safely accessible, and keep estimates and service reports together.

Act on safety concerns

If you smell gas, leave the building and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move everyone to fresh air and call emergency services. Do not try to repair the source yourself.
